Questions About Vaping

  • Even the Anti-Vaping community agrees that vaping is safer than smoking cigarettes, why is that?

It is the sheer simplicity of the ingredients.  Cigarettes have thousands of chemicals engaging in a chemical reaction. In a vape, a very short list of ingredients is heated without combustion:  Propylene Glycol, Vegetable Glycerine, Nicotine(optional), and Kosher-grade food flavorings.

  • Propylene Glycol? Do I want to be inhaling that?

Propylene Glycol, or PG, is what the flavorings and the nicotine cling to.  Propylene Glycol is the delivery system for vapes... and... ASTHMA INHALERS.

  • What about this Vegetable Glycerine?

Vegetable Glycerine, or VG, will be present in a great majority of food products you will find at your local grocery store.  In the scope of a vape, its presence thickens the e-juice and accentuates the cloud to be exhaled.  Oddly enough, Fluorocarbons, commonly used as propellants in asthma inhalers, are currently being replaced by Glycerine in many inhalers.

  • Popcorn Lung? That sounds scary...ahem, elaborate please.

It is.  The writer would recommend that if you work in a buttered popcorn manufacturing plant, that you try to move along within a handful of years.  Those buttery flavorings contain Diacetyl and Acetyl Propionyl, molecules found in many plants, used for their strong buttery and creamy flavors.  The amounts, or levels, of them that can be safely ingested, is higher than what can be safely inhaled.  The concern was raised and resolved in the vaping industry nearly immediately, with flavoring bottles boasting Diacetyl and Acetyl Propionyl FREE.  Simply reducing the levels would achieve the same safe result.  It is recommended, however, to only vape on e-juice from manufacturers and retailers with high consumer confidence to be completely protected from this obscure concern.

  • If it is so obscure, why do I hear about it as breaking news twice a year for the last 6 years?

There have been zero cases of popcorn lung among e-cigarette users.  The answer to that question is open to speculation.

  • I'm about to get on a plane, what do I need to know to travel with my vape?

E-juice, or any liquid/gel at all, must be in containers no larger than 3.4ozs(100ml bottles are fine).  A passenger may have multiple bottles, but they must fit into a SINGLE quart-sized ZIP-TOP baggie.  It can be in either checked luggage or your carry-on.  The vapes themselves, batteries, atomizers, etc., MUST be on your person or in your carry-on ONLY.  It is recommended that you check the vaping laws at your destination, some places have banned the use and sale of e-cigarettes.

  • What is the deal with Nicotine Salts?

Nicotine Salts are an alternative to Nicotine; Equal milligram strengths will affect your body the same way, the nicotine salts are merely derived differently so that the harshness is diminished ~70%.  This is particularly useful for someone trying to quit smokeless tobacco, as they have a very high nicotine tolerance and little hope of a suitable nicotine strength feeling comfortable on their lungs.  Closed pod systems like the Juul and many disposable vapes use Nicotine Salts to attain high doses(50-60mg) without the harshness being unbearable.
